The Aglaonema Romeo, also called Chinese Plant or Chinese Evergreen, is a tropical plant native to the humid forests of Southeast Asia. Its large oval dark green leaves, marbled with silver and cream variegation, create graphic and bright foliage — especially effective in dim corners where few decorative plants survive.
Robust, tolerant of neglect, and adaptable to varying light levels, it is one of the easiest indoor plants for beginners and city dwellers. It also helps purify indoor air. Note: toxic if ingested by pets — keep out of reach.
Which Aglaonema variety to choose?
Aglaonemas are mainly distinguished by the color and intensity of their variegation. Here are the most distinct profiles from our collection:
- Aglaonema Romeo (this plant) — dark green leaves variegated with silver and cream, bushy habit. The most balanced and versatile.
- Aglaonema Silver Bay — predominantly bright silver leaves. The brightest and most graphic.
- Aglaonema Spring Red — green and pink-red leaves, warm color touches. The most colorful and original.
- Aglaonema Jungle Silver — very graphic marbled silver foliage, medium size. The most contrasting.
- Aglaonema B.J. Freedman — large dark green leaves, impressive 70 cm size. The most voluminous.
Other varieties are available in our collection — including compact sizes and creamy white tones for all styles. Find them all in our Aglaonema collection.
Exposure & placement
The Aglaonema Romeo naturally grows under the canopy of tropical forests — it is one of the most low-light tolerant indoor plants while maintaining decorative foliage.
- Ideal exposure: moderate indirect light — a few meters from a window, in a living room or interior office.
- Tolerance: partial shade, low light areas, artificial light only.
- Avoid: prolonged direct sunlight which fades variegation and burns leaves.
- Temperature: 18–26 °C — very sensitive to cold. Below 15 °C, growth stops and spots appear on the leaves.
- Soil: well-draining universal potting mix with some perlite.
The brighter the location (without direct sun), the more pronounced and contrasted the silver variegation will be. In a dark corner, the foliage tends to turn greener — this is reversible by moving the plant.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — let the top 2–3 cm of soil dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: once a week in summer, every 10–15 days in winter.
- Water: room temperature water, filtered or left to stand for 24 hours if possible.
- Humidity: tolerates dry air but prefers 50–70% humidity — mist occasionally in heated winter rooms.
- Fertilizer: liquid green plant fertilizer diluted by half, once a month in spring and summer.
- Cleaning: dust large leaves with a damp cloth to maintain their shine and promote photosynthesis.
Aglaonema easily forgives missed waterings — when in doubt, wait rather than water too much. Overwatering is its main cause of decline.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
With its bushy habit and graphic foliage, the Aglaonema Romeo structures a space without dominating it. It brings plant texture where other plants wouldn’t survive.
- In a low-light corner: placed on furniture or a shelf a few meters from a window, it remains decorative where most graphic plants would wither.
- In arrangement: pair it with a Zamioculcas or a Philodendron for a contrast of textures and volumes in a low-light interior.
- Ideal pot: matte white, gray, or terracotta ceramic — neutral tones highlight the silver variegation without competing with it.
Group several Aglaonema varieties with different variegations to create a cohesive indoor tropical display — same care needs, guaranteed visual contrasts.
Verdeia Tips
- Yellow leaves: check drainage first — yellowing is almost always due to overwatering or stagnant water in the saucer. Always empty the saucer after watering and let the soil dry out more between waterings.
- Fading variegation: lack of light — if new leaves come out greener and less silver, move the plant to a brighter spot. Variegation returns on new growth as soon as light is sufficient.
- Protect from cold — Aglaonema is especially sensitive to low temperatures. Below 15 °C, growth stops and brown or translucent spots appear on leaves. Keep away from poorly insulated windows in winter and drafts.
- Brown tips: air too dry or excess fertilizer — mist the foliage in very dry air and always dilute fertilizer to half strength. Too concentrated fertilizer burns roots and shows as brown tips.
- Repot in spring without urgency — Aglaonema prefers to be slightly root-bound. Repot only when roots appear under the pot, every 2–3 years, into a slightly larger pot.
- ⚠️ Toxic to animals and humans — contains calcium oxalate crystals that irritate mucous membranes. Keep out of reach of cats, dogs, and young children. See our plants and pets guide for suitable alternatives.
